Today's Uses For The Canvas Tent

Today's canvas tent is not simply the triangular ground tent that it once was.  The canvas tent is still sometimes used for those original ground tents, but overall it has evolved.  When ground tents started being made from nylon and mesh, canvas tent creators looked elsewhere for their new models.  The canvas tent is rarely used these days for actually camping.  Most models are used for parties and other events.

Cotton Canvas Tent

One innovative type of canvas tent is the cotton canvas tent.  This canvas tent is used solely for parties and events.  It is made out of think cotton and is not waterproof.  Therefore, it is best to use this type of canvas tent in fair weather.  Most experts would agree that cotton canvas is not the ideal material for making the canvas tent.   However, this canvas tent model offers great ventilation and a whimsical style, perfect for weddings.  It is also one of the more inexpensive forms of the canvas tent.

Wall Tent

Wall tents are one of the most popular models related to the original canvas tent.  Wall tents are large “rooms” or “cabins” made of canvas.  They offer no floor, but four sturdy walls.  Many also offer screen doors and windows.  This canvas tent is usually waterproofed as well as mildew resistant.  They can be expensive, but can last up to 20 years of more when taken care of properly.

Originally wall tents were used for military purposes and are still used in some areas today.  Today, serious hunters and fishermen who need the protection and space during their adventures use this type of canvas tent.

Things To Consider

The canvas tent is a great product, however there are a few things to consider when purchasing or using one.  The most important thing to think about is whether the canvas tent is fire retardant.  Canvas is highly flammable and should be pre-treated in order to protect users from open flames.  .

Another thing to consider is if the canvas tent is mildew resistant.  The canvas tent is a natural collector of mildew, however if pre-treated, mildew will not be an issue.  Most models of the canvas tent have been waterproofed, however it is to the best interest of the user to be sure before experiencing it in the rain.

The canvas tent may be the oldest form of tent around, however its uses are still numerous and popular.  With today’s safety features, the canvas tent is ensured not to go off the market anytime soon.
